NHL Playoff Race 2026-27
Eastern Conference: Panthers hold the second wild card on 18 points, with Maple Leafs level on points behind them. Western Conference: Blues hold the second wild card on 15 points, with Predators level on points behind them.
Sixteen clubs reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The top three in each division qualify outright, which fills 12 places. The last four go to wild cards, two per conference, taken by the best remaining records regardless of division. The line in the Wild Card view marks that cut.
How NHL Standings Work
A win is worth two points, whether it comes in 60 minutes, overtime or a shootout. A loss in overtime or a shootout is worth one point. A loss in regulation is worth none. That is why a club can sit above another club with the same number of wins: the overtime losses count.
Clubs do not all play the same number of games on a given night, so points alone can mislead in October and November. Points percentage (P%) divides points by points available and is the fairer read early on. It is also the first tiebreaker.
Level on points, the order is: fewer games played, then regulation wins (RW), then regulation plus overtime wins (ROW), then total wins, then head-to-head points, then goal differential, then goals scored. RW and ROW exist to reward clubs that win without needing a shootout.
These NHL standings refresh after every final of the 2026-27 season. Division, wild card, conference and league views sit on this one page, and every column sorts.
FAQ About NHL Standings
Who is first in the NHL standings right now?
Carolina Hurricanes lead the overall NHL standings with 26 points from 16 games (12-2-2). Hurricanes lead the Eastern Conference and Oilers lead the Western Conference.
How many teams make the NHL playoffs?
Sixteen. The top three clubs in each of the four divisions qualify, which fills 12 places. The last four go to wild cards, two in each conference, taken by the best remaining records regardless of division.
How do NHL points work?
Two points for a win in any format. One point for a loss in overtime or a shootout. Nothing for a regulation loss. Both clubs take a point into overtime, which is why the loser still scores one.
What is the first tiebreaker in the NHL standings?
Fewer games played, which is the same as a higher points percentage. After that comes regulation wins, then regulation plus overtime wins, then total wins, then head-to-head points, then goal differential, then goals scored.
What do RW, ROW, SOW and SOL mean?
RW is regulation wins, won inside 60 minutes. ROW is regulation plus overtime wins, which leaves shootout wins out. SOW and SOL are shootout wins and shootout losses. RW and ROW are tiebreakers, so a club that wins without a shootout is rewarded.
What does P% mean in the standings?
Points percentage: points earned divided by points available, which is two per game played. It is the fair way to compare clubs that have played a different number of games, and it decides ties before regulation wins.
What do the letters beside a team mean?
x means the club has clinched a playoff spot, y the division, z the conference and p the Presidents' Trophy for the best record. e means eliminated. These tags are worked out conservatively here, so one can appear a game later than the official clinch, never earlier.
How often do these NHL standings update?
Every result feeds the table within minutes of the final horn, so points, streaks, the last 10 and the wild card line are current whenever the page is opened.
