How the Four Divisions Compare

Points earned per game played, averaged across each division. A figure near 1.00 is exactly average, because two points are awarded per game and losing after regulation still returns one. The Atlantic Division is running strongest at 2.52 points per game.

Average points earned per game played in each division. Overtime and shootout losses count for one point, so a division can sit above 1.00 by drawing more games out past regulation.

Canadian and American NHL Teams

Seven of the 32 clubs are based in Canada and the other 25 play in the United States. The Canadian teams are Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets. None has won the Stanley Cup since 1993, which is why every Canadian run deep into the playoffs becomes a national story.

The American clubs stretch from Boston and Florida in the east to Seattle, Los Angeles and Anaheim on the Pacific coast, which is why late puck drops are a normal part of the schedule for eastern viewers. Utah is the newest market, having taken on the former Arizona franchise, and the Mammoth play in the Central Division.

How NHL Teams Are Organised

The Eastern Conference holds the Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions. The Western Conference holds the Central and Pacific. A club plays its own division most often, the rest of its conference next, and the opposite conference least, so rivalries build inside a division across a season.

Sixteen teams reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs: the top three in each division, plus two wild cards in each conference awarded to the best remaining records regardless of division. That format means a third-place finish in a strong division is worth more than fourth in a weak one, and it is why the wild card race is usually the tightest part of the standings.

Has the NHL Always Had 32 Teams?

No. For 25 years the league was the Original Six: Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, New York and Toronto. That era ended in 1967, when the league doubled to twelve clubs in a single expansion, and growth has continued in waves ever since.

The most recent additions arrived quickly. Vegas entered as the 31st franchise in 2017 and reached the Stanley Cup Final in its first season. Seattle followed as the 32nd in 2021. The newest name on the map is not an expansion club at all: the Arizona franchise relocated to Salt Lake City and now plays as the Utah Mammoth in the Central Division.

NHL Team Abbreviations

Scoreboards, box scores and the tables on this site use three-letter codes. Most are obvious from the city, but a few trip people up because two clubs share a market or a city name is too short on its own.

  • NYR and NYI separate the New York Rangers from the New York Islanders.
  • LAK, SJS, TBL and NJD add a letter because LA, SJ, TB and NJ are two-letter markets.
  • VGK is Vegas Golden Knights, not VEG, and UTA is the Utah Mammoth.
  • CBJ is Columbus Blue Jackets, distinct from Calgary at CGY and Carolina at CAR.

The A to Z table above lists every code alongside the club’s conference, division, home market and country, and the column headings sort, so you can group the whole league by division or by country in one tap.

Where NHL Teams Play, and Why It Affects Your Evening

The league spans four time zones in the United States and Canada, which is the single biggest reason game times vary so much. A club on the Pacific coast starting at 7:00 PM local is a 10:00 PM ET puck drop, so an eastern viewer following Vancouver, Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles or Anaheim is committing to a late night several times a week.
