How the Stanley Cup Final Works

The Final is a best-of-seven series between the Eastern Conference champion and the Western Conference champion. The first club to four wins takes the Stanley Cup. It is the fourth and last round of the playoffs, so the winner has won 16 games in the spring.

Home ice goes to the club with more regular-season points, not the higher seed. It hosts games 1, 2, 5 and 7; the other club hosts games 3, 4 and 6. That 2-2-1-1-1 pattern is the same in every round.

There is no shootout. A game tied after 60 minutes goes to full 20-minute periods of five-on-five sudden death until someone scores, however many periods that takes.

The Cup is presented on the ice minutes after the deciding game, and the Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player of the whole playoffs is awarded just before it. The winning captain lifts the Cup first, then each player takes a turn.

TV Rights for the 2027 Stanley Cup Final: What Changed

In the United States, TNT has the 2027 Final. It is the third and last Final under TNT’s seven-year deal with the league, after 2023 and 2025; ESPN and ABC had 2022, 2024 and 2026. truTV simulcasts the games and HBO Max streams them. ESPN gets first pick of the two conference finals in 2027, and TNT takes the other.

In Canada, 2026-27 is the first season of Rogers’ new 12-year deal. Sportsnet produces the playoffs and the Final. Prime Video streams two first-round series and one second-round series each year, but not the Final. TVA Sports has the Final in French under a 12-year sublicense announced on Sept. 3, 2026.

What I’m watching: CBC no longer carries NHL games after 74 years, so 2027 is the first Final with no Hockey Night in Canada telecast. Canadian fans need Sportsnet or Sportsnet+ for every game.

How a Team Reaches the Stanley Cup Final

Sixteen of the 32 clubs make the playoffs: the top three in each division and two wild cards in each conference. Four best-of-seven rounds follow, so the Cup takes 16 wins. Home ice in every round goes to the club with more regular-season points, not the higher seed.

The 2026 run shows how uneven the road can be. Carolina went 16-3 and opened 8-0, a start no club had managed since the current format began in 1987. Vegas reached the Final as the lowest seed left in the West with 95 points, after sweeping Colorado, who led the league with 121. The full bracket is on the NHL Playoffs page.

The Stanley Cup Itself

Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor General of Canada, donated the Cup in 1892. It was first awarded in 1893, which makes it the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America. The NHL has had sole control of it since the 1926-27 season.

There is one Cup, not a new one each year. The names of the winning players and staff are engraved on its bands, and each player gets a day with it in the summer. A Keeper of the Cup from the Hockey Hall of Fame travels with it.

The Montreal Canadiens have won it 24 times, more than any club; their last was 1993. The Toronto Maple Leafs have the longest wait among past winners, with nothing since 1967. Ten of the 32 clubs have never won it. The full list is in the history section above.

Stanley Cup Final or Stanley Cup Finals?

The NHL has called it the Stanley Cup Final, singular, since the 2005-06 season. The league’s reasoning is that the series is one event made of up to seven games. Broadcasters and fans often say Stanley Cup Finals, the same way they say NBA Finals. Both names point to the same series, and this page answers both.
