How the NHL Playoffs Work
Sixteen of the 32 clubs reach the playoffs, eight from each conference. Twelve places go to the top three finishers in each of the four divisions. The last four are wild cards, two per conference, and they go to the best records left over no matter which division they come from. The 84-game regular season does not change any of this.
Seeding the bracket
In each conference the division winner with the better record plays the second wild card. The other division winner plays the first wild card. Second and third in each division play each other. That keeps division rivals on the same side of the bracket in the first two rounds.
Home ice
The club with more regular-season points opens at home and holds games one, two, five and seven. Points decide it, not seeding, so a wild card with more points than a division winner still gets home ice. The standings tiebreakers settle a level finish: regulation wins first, then regulation and overtime wins, then total wins, then goal differential.
The four rounds
- First round Eight series, four in each conference. Winners move on.
- Second round Four series. The two survivors in each conference meet next.
- Conference finals Two series. The winners play for the Cup.
- Stanley Cup Final One series between the Eastern and Western champions.
Overtime
There is no shootout in the playoffs. A game tied after 60 minutes goes to full 20-minute five-on-five sudden-death periods, and they keep coming until someone scores. A club needs 16 wins to lift the Cup.

FAQ About the NHL Playoffs
When do the 2027 NHL playoffs start?
The Stanley Cup Playoffs begin in April 2027, a few days after the 2026-27 regular season ends. The league sets the first-round dates and start times once the last regular-season night decides the matchups, so exact dates are confirmed late.
How many teams make the NHL playoffs?
Sixteen of the 32 clubs, eight from each conference. The top three in each of the four divisions take 12 places. Two wild cards per conference fill the last four, and they go to the best records left over regardless of division.
How does the NHL playoff bracket work?
In each conference the division winner with the better record plays the second wild card, and the other division winner plays the first wild card. Second plays third inside each division. Winners meet in the second round on the same side of the bracket, then the conference final, then the Stanley Cup Final.
What is a wild card in the NHL?
A wild card is a playoff place that is not tied to a division finish. After the top three in each division qualify, the two clubs with the most points left in the conference get in, even if both come from the same division.
Who gets home ice in the NHL playoffs?
The club with more regular-season points. It hosts games one, two, five and seven. Because points decide it rather than seeding, a wild card that finished with more points than a division winner keeps home ice.
Do NHL playoff games go to a shootout?
No. The shootout is a regular-season rule. A playoff game tied after 60 minutes plays full 20-minute five-on-five sudden-death periods until a goal ends it, however many that takes.
How many games are in an NHL playoff series?
Every series is a best-of-seven, so the first club to four wins moves on. Winning the Stanley Cup takes 16 wins across four rounds.
What channel are the 2027 NHL playoffs on?
In the United States, ESPN platforms carry the first round, the second round and one conference final. TNT carries the other conference final and the 2027 Stanley Cup Final, which also streams on HBO Max. In Canada the Final is on Sportsnet.
